Tuolumne Meadows Water Treatment System Replacement

WHO WE ARE

Yosemite National Park, California

HECO Engineers provided valuable services for the improvement of the surface water treatment system in Tuolumne Meadows, a popular area within Yosemite National Park, California. The existing water treatment system, which was constructed in 1967 with filtration upgrades in 1984, had become outdated and required modernization to meet the needs of employees and visitors.

HECO conducted a thorough evaluation of alternative treatment technologies suitable for remote sites with limited operating staff. Based on this assessment, they designed improvements to the filtration system to automate the process and incorporate analytical instrumentation. The design also allowed for future integration of the site into the existing park-wide SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system as part of another project. Additionally, the design included provisions for system shutdown during the winter months, ensuring the facility’s winterization and implementing seasonal opening and closing procedures.

One of the primary goals of the filtration system design was to streamline operations and make the process as efficient as possible for the operators. Considering the limited construction period available between spring access to the site and the park’s opening, the design aimed to facilitate increased monitoring of the treatment facility from a remote central location, reducing the need for on-site monitoring and enhancing operational efficiency.

HECO Engineers provided a range of services to support this project, including civil engineering, project management, the preparation of a Title I report for preliminary engineering, the development of Title II construction documents, and conducting a condition assessment.
