This week we celebrate the 25th Work Anniversary of our President, John Blom!

25 years invested into one company is no small feat. In the Engineering world, long lasting, valued relationships are the foundation for creating sustainable, safe, innovative projects. HECO Engineers has always kept this philosophy as the bulwark of the company, and John Blom, along with the rest of HECO leadership, steers the rudder to follow the current of progress. Providing the best possible service to our clients is the top priority of HECO. Having leadership that has developed through the life of the company helps achieve that goal.

John started with HECO in 1993, when it was known as Holladay Engineering, named for the founder, Mike Holladay. John stepped into the role of President in 2016, when Vern Brewer, one of the original Engineers of the company and the President, retired. Over his career with HECO, John has worked on projects throughout the US, from Oregon and California, all the way to Ohio. He has managed projects in Water, Wastewater, Environmental Services and Oyster Demolition.

Wait, did we just say Oyster Demolition? Yes, yes we did. One of John’s more unique projects, The Drakes Bay Oyster Demolition Project (located in California) puts HECO in the lead for Oyster removal Engineering in the US. John was heavily involved in this project to safely remove all in-water infrastructures and oyster debris in a way that was environmentally friendly and efficient. John loves to swim, regularly taking a dip in the local pool, but we think he passed up these Oyster filled waters when working on this project!

Born and raised on a dairy farm in Jerome, Idaho, John is a true lover of the outdoors and sports that get him out under the clear Idaho sky. Besides swimming, John likes to hit the road with his bicycle for long rides, sometimes in preparation for a competition or triathlon. His family enjoys spending time at their home in the country, and chasing after their young dachshund pup, Bailey.

When asked why John chose Engineering as his career, he said “I love solving problems. Engineering allows me to start at the root of a problem, find a solution, and then see that solution all the way through to completion. Seeing the long-lasting results of your effort is really satisfying.”

HECO is very glad John chose to apply his problem-solving talents to engineering, and that he chose the Treasure Valley to work and raise his family. With his leadership, we look forward to serving our clients with integrity, professionalism and reliability for many years to come!
