HECO Engineers: A Tradition of Excellence in Civil Engineering

For over 40 years, HECO Engineers has been a leading provider of civil engineering services from coast to coast including 26 other states including Idaho, Oregon, California and Texas to name a few.

With offices in Nampa and Payette, we’ve built a reputation as a trusted partner for municipalities, developers, building owners, manufacturers, and anyone seeking innovative and cost-effective engineering solutions. Under the leadership of our president, John Blom, HECO Engineers continues to grow and expand its offerings, maintaining the core values and vision established by our founders, Mike Holladay and Vern Brewer.

The Founding Vision: Serving Communities with Heart

When Mike Holladay and Vern Brewer established HECO Engineers, their mission was clear: to provide municipal engineering services to small towns in Western Idaho. These communities, too small to sustain a full-time city engineer, relied on HECO’s expertise to address their infrastructure needs. Over the years, HECO has become synonymous with high-quality municipal engineering, specializing in water systemswastewater managementland use planning, and the design of streets, roads, curbs, and gutters.

Our dedication to these essential services has not only earned us trust but also reinforced our commitment to solving complex problems for the communities we serve. Each project is approached with precision and care, knowing that our work directly impacts the lives of residents.

A Natural Evolution: Partnering with the National Park Service

About 21 years ago, HECO Engineers embarked on a transformative partnership with the National Park Service (NPS). What began as an exploration of shared values quickly became a long-standing relationship rooted in mutual respect and collaboration.

“Our wheelhouse of being a city engineer was a good match with the National Park Service,” John Blom explains. “Every park is a small municipality.”

This synergy allowed HECO to expand its expertise beyond traditional municipal engineering into a broader range of disciplines. Today, our services include electrical engineeringstructural engineeringland development, and, most recently, mechanical engineering. This multidiscipline approach ensures that HECO can deliver comprehensive solutions tailored to diverse client needs.

Guiding Principles: The Golden Rule in Action

At the heart of HECO Engineers is a simple yet profound principle: the Golden Rule. Treat others the way you want to be treated. This philosophy guides every aspect of our work, from the way we interact with clients to the solutions we deliver.

“Our motto and management principle is really the golden rule,” says John Blom. “If we’re treating our clients the way we would want to be treated, that’s taking care of them.”

This client-first approach is evident in our long-standing relationships and the repeat business we receive. Commitment to Excellence: Building for the Future

One of the most significant aspects of HECO’s work is its lasting impact. For municipalities, a multi-million-dollar project is a major investment, and we take that responsibility seriously.

“We really take it to heart that we need to get this right,” says Blom. “We need to provide them the most cost-effective solution that hits their problems now and fixes them into the future.”

This forward-thinking approach ensures that every project we undertake not only addresses immediate challenges but also prepares communities for long-term growth and development. By combining innovative engineering practices with a deep understanding of our clients’ needs, we consistently deliver quality projects that stand the test of time.
