Rehabilitation of Raspberry Island Lighthouse
WHO WE ARE
Apostle Island National Lakeshore, Bayfield, Wisconsin
The project involved the rehabilitation of a historic Lighthouse on Raspberry Island at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (“park”) in northern Wisconsin. The island is located in Lake Superior a few miles north of the southern Wisconsin lakeshore. The Lighthouse is configured as a duplex in order to provide separate quarters for the Lighthouse keeper and one or two assistant keepers. The project rehabilitated the Lighthouse for adaptive use, with the north half serving as quarters for three seasonal (summer) employees, and the south half restored to its historic appearance (early 20th century) for interpretive uses.
The Raspberry Island light station is one of six in the park, all of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The six light stations comprise what has been called “the nation’s finest collection of historic lighthouses,” and the Raspberry Island Lighthouse has been called “the showplace of the Apostles.” As the most readily accessible of the six island light stations, Raspberry Island is by far the most heavily visited, and it serves as the focal point of the park’s interpretive efforts. Visitors access the island either on their own boats or on a concessionaire-operated tour boat. Tours of the Lighthouse are provided by park seasonal employees who live on the island during the May to September visitor season.
