Paleo Resources Management Building

WHO WE ARE

Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument, Hagerman, ID

This project demolished two existing facilities, constructing a replacement Paleontology Lab/Resource Management building. The demolition included a 1,069-square foot Maceration building with a Facility Condition Index of 0.340 (Poor) and an 1,855-square foot Paleontology Lab with a Facility Condition Index of 0.151 (Poor). The new facility is an approximately 2,924-square foot resource management building. The bulk of space is used for fossil prep, identification, analysis, documentation, curation, and study. The fossils need to be treated as radon-emitting. The space also allows for safety equipment (eye wash, emergency shower, etc.), accessibility, minimal but appropriate space between preparation stations, a restroom, safe storage of chemicals used in processing fossils, two small offices (allowing separation safety concerns regarding dust created during preparation of fossils). Given concerns with fossil theft across the country, the facility includes a security system and meets fire safety requirements. This project also constructed an unpaved road approximately 20-feet wide and 600-feet long, with the installation of an entry gate to serve as the only public access to park facilities. HECO was tasked to develop a final preliminary design for the new Paleo Resource Building and new entry road, and later prepared alternative design layouts (3) for the new facility. After presentation of the alternate designs and upon approval of the park, HECO prepared a final preliminary design for the facility.
