Problem

The City of Kuna, Idaho, faced increasing demands on its water system due to rapid urban development. The existing Well 6 system needed a significant upgrade to enhance water storage capacity and improve fire protection for the city. Key challenges included:

      • Storage Capacity: The city required additional water storage to meet growing demand and comply with its Water Master Plan.
      • Pumping Infrastructure: The existing Well 6 needed modifications, including the installation of booster pumps to handle the increased flow.
      • Foundation Design: The site required a geotechnical investigation to ensure proper foundation support for the 750,000-gallon reservoir.
      • System Monitoring: Integration with the City’s SCADA system was necessary for remote operation and monitoring of the well and booster pumps.

Solution

HECO Engineers addressed these challenges with a comprehensive approach:

  • Site Survey and Geotechnical Investigation: HECO conducted a detailed site survey to layout the new piping and reservoir location. A geotechnical investigation was also performed to ensure a stable foundation for the reservoir.
  • Structural and Mechanical Engineering: The existing Well 6 piping was modified to discharge into the new 750,000-gallon bolted steel reservoir. HECO designed and installed two new booster pumps with a capacity of 1,800 gallons per minute (GPM), controlled by Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) for efficient water distribution.

  • SCADA Integration and Electrical Design: The controls and telemetry system was integrated into the city’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for seamless remote monitoring. HECO designed and installed a new pump-to-waste line and pressure relief valve for system safety.
  • Contract Documents and Specifications: All contract documents and technical specifications were prepared in accordance with Idaho Standards for Public Works Construction (ISPWC) and the City of Kuna’s requirements.

Results

The successful completion of the Kuna Well 6 Reservoir & Booster Station project provided the City of Kuna with:

      • Increased Water Storage: A 750,000-gallon reservoir that meets current and future water storage needs.
      • Enhanced Fire Protection: The new reservoir and booster pumps provide improved fire protection capabilities for the community.
      • Operational Efficiency: The integration of VFD-controlled booster pumps and SCADA monitoring system increases efficiency and reduces energy consumption.
      • Seamless Integration: The new infrastructure was designed to integrate with the existing Well 6 site, providing a smooth and effective upgrade.
