Visitor Center and Headquarter Restoration

WHO WE ARE

Channel Island National Park, California

Santa Cruz Island sits off the coast of California near Los Angeles and represents the largest island in Channel Island National Park. The island hosts both the visitor center and the headquarters of the park, providing visitors with a unique experience of the Malibu coastline and Pacific Ocean. The headquarters were served by one semi-basement geared traction passenger elevator, and it showed signs of wear and did not functionally meet ADA requirements. HECO was given the task order of modernizing and refurbishing the aging elevator using a design build package approach. The old elevator was replaced with a new elevator that meets code and fit in the previous footprint. The process included a site visit, scoping trip, and condition assessment. Refurbishment included replacement of lubricants, rebuilding of the brake, a new AC motor, a new governor, a new rope brake, seismic rope retention and a direct drive velocity encoder. New fixtures were required to bring the elevator into compliance with local and state codes. This included car station, position indicator, hall buttons, hall lanterns, new Braille plates, and hoist way access switches

In this same timeframe, HECO was also tasked with replacing the failed air handler in the Santa Cruz Island Visitor Center in a separate task order. The HVAC system serving the Visitor Center and Park Headquarters at the time was comprised of seven air handlers that served the facility through ducted registers and grilles. Each air handler provided heating through a single water source, 500,000 Btu gas-fired boiler, with solar hot water pre-heat. The solar hot water pre-heat was disabled and non-functional.
