Problem

The parking area and surrounding sidewalks at Dante’s View offered world-class vistas but presented significant hazards that required urgent attention. The site was underdeveloped and physically deteriorating, which put both the visitors and the environment at risk.

  • Visitors frequently ventured off the pavement onto steep, unconsolidated slopes bordered by a precipice without railings.

  • Active erosion was undermining the existing sidewalk, creating a critical safety concern.

  • The site was underdeveloped, with potential to enhance visitor experiences while addressing these hazards.

Solution

HECO Engineers provided a comprehensive engineering solution, moving from initial field scoping to final construction oversight. The design focused on using durable materials and specialized structures to withstand the harsh Death Valley environment while ensuring public safety.

  • Prepared a Title I Scoping Trip Report and Design Development Report to refine plan alternatives and specify construction methods.

  • Developed full Title II construction documents for retaining walls, guardrails, drainage improvements, grading, and paving.

  • Engineered specific structural features, including brickwork and a cantilevered deck, to provide a safe viewing platform.

  • Provided Title III construction oversight and inspection services to ensure compliance with the design intent.

Result

The National Park Service successfully upgraded the Dante’s View Visitor Area, resulting in a safer and more resilient infrastructure that meets federal standards.

  • The National Park Service issued final acceptance of the Dante’s View Visitor Area upgrade on May 5, 2018.

  • Safety risks were mitigated by securing the overlook with engineered guardrails and a cantilevered platform.

  • Erosion issues were addressed through improved drainage and structural retaining walls.
