Problem

The existing wood bridge in Crouch, Idaho, presented numerous critical issues that necessitated immediate attention to ensure public safety and infrastructure integrity.

The main problems included:

  • Single-lane Structure: The old bridge was a narrow single-lane structure with a width of only 14 feet, which was inadequate for modern traffic demands and posed a significant risk for accidents.
  • Structural Deterioration: Over time, the bridge had deteriorated extensively, compromising its structural integrity and making it unsafe for use. This deterioration posed severe safety hazards to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Inadequate Approaches: The bridge’s approaches were not designed to safely accommodate the entrance and exit of vehicles, especially those of varying sizes, leading to potential safety issues and traffic bottlenecks.

Solution

HECO Engineers provided a comprehensive solution to address the critical deficiencies of the existing bridge. The approach involved planning, design, and execution to ensure the new bridge met modern safety standards and operational requirements.

Key components of the solution included:

  • Design and Construction of a New Two-lane Steel Truss Bridge: The new bridge was designed to be a two-lane steel truss structure, significantly improving its capacity and safety features. This design accommodated a wider range of vehicles and ensured smoother traffic flow.
  • Road Realignment: The road leading to and from the bridge was realigned to enhance overall safety. This realignment included improved approaches for safer vehicular entrance and exit, reducing the risk of accidents.
  • Collaboration with Boise County and LHTAC: Initially, a design utilizing 84-inch prestressed concrete bulb tee girders and a composite concrete deck was developed. However, after consultations with Boise County and the Local Highway Technical Assistance Council (LHTAC), the decision was made to pursue a steel through-truss bridge design. This change required redesigning the abutments to support the new bridge structure.
  • Extensive Surveying and Hydraulic Modeling: HECO Engineers conducted thorough surveying to establish accurate road right-of-way, private property boundaries, and topographic data essential for the design process. Hydraulic modeling was employed to ensure proper water flow considerations, safeguarding the bridge from future flood risks.
  • Comprehensive Construction Management: The project involved collaboration with Elite Edge for design work and structural engineering. This partnership ensured seamless project management, design, surveying, and structural engineering throughout the project’s duration.

Results

The successful implementation of the bridge replacement project brought about significant improvements in infrastructure and public safety for the Crouch community.

The key outcomes included:

  • Safe and Efficient Two-lane Bridge: The new bridge provided a safer, more efficient passage for vehicles, accommodating modern traffic demands and enhancing overall road safety.
  • Improved Vehicular Approaches: The realigned road and improved approaches facilitated safer and more efficient vehicular movement, reducing the risk of accidents at the bridge entrances and exits.
  • Enhanced Road Alignment and Safety: The comprehensive road realignment and enhanced safety features contributed to a safer and more reliable transportation route.
  • Project Completion Within Budget: The project was successfully completed within the allocated budget of $1.7 million, reflecting efficient project management and resource utilization.
  • Increased Reliability and Longevity: The new steel truss bridge provided a robust and durable infrastructure solution, ensuring long-term reliability and reduced maintenance needs.
